Crown Windley 100th Anniversary

Crown Windley are probably one of the oldest metrology companies in the world, Originally Crown Works established in 1906 and based in Chelmsford, the company, after greater demand for products, expanded and re-located to Ripley, Derbyshire.

The Crown logo became an identifiable mark with almost every laboratory and standards room in industry, not only in the UK but on a global scale.

Originally known for their wide range of Cast Iron/granite surface tables and masters; in recent years Crown have been active suppliers of bed plates and cantilever arm machines to predominantly the automotive industry. Crown have sold and manufactured a wide range of Cantilever arm CMM’s since the mid sixties.

The main strategy of the purchase by Eley Metrology Ltd. was and still is to increase the scope and size of the business; with the addition of Crown CMM’s, layout machines, surface tables and Metrology standards. The acquisition also included the continuation of employment with E.M.S.S. Ltd of several key members of the Crown staff in order to enable a smooth transition and ensure progress for the future.

Almost all existing Crown contracts have been transferred successfully and are now part of Eley Metrology (Sales& Services) Ltd. established customer base.

With the addition of new products to the range and a new brochure imminent, it is hoped that the Crown Windley name will continue to be at the forefront of metrology standards for another 100 years to come!
